A man hiking a steep trail north of Moreno Valley Friday suffered a heart attack and died, despite efforts by paramedics to save him.

The “hiker down” call was received about 6:45 a.m. along 2 Trees Trail on Box Springs Mountain, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

Several engine crews were sent to the location, but firefighters had to go on foot roughly a half-mile up the trail before they found the victim, the department reported.

Emergency aid was rendered to the man, who was in cardiac arrest, officials said.

“Despite all efforts, the patient perished at the scene,” according to a department statement.

The man’s body was carried down the trail and turned over to coroner’s investigators.

An autopsy was pending.

The man’s name was not immediately released.
