A 29-year-old Norwalk man was behind bars Thursday on charges of shooting another man in Costa Mesa in March.

Max Diamond, who was arrested Wednesday, was charged July 27 with attempted murder with a sentencing enhancement for the discharge of a gun causing great bodily injury, according to court records.

Police responded to a shots fired call at 5:40 a.m. March 2 in the 2000 block of Harbor Boulevard, police said. When they arrived, they learned that a 30-year-old man from Costa Mesa had sustained a gunshot wound and was taken to a nearby hospital, police said.

When officers tracked down the victim, he was being treated for a wound to his neck, police said. The victim, whose name was not released, had heard a commotion between a man and a woman and when he heard her scream, he went to investigate, then saw her running away as Diamond pursued, police said.

The woman managed to get away, running south on Harbor, police said. Diamond then turned his attention to the Costa Mesa man, pulled a gun and shot him.

Diamond ran away north on Harbor, police said.

Police tracked down Diamond and the woman he was with the night of the shooting and followed him to an Anaheim gas station, where he was arrested without incident, police said.

Diamond is scheduled to be arraigned Friday in the jail courtroom in Santa Ana.
