A man who allegedly fired shots from the rooftop of a single-story residence in the Walnut Park area was shot by a sheriff’s deputy Monday and taken into custody.
Deputies went to the 2500 block of Sale Place about 4:05 a.m. on reports of a person on a rooftop, but were unable to find the individual, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Deputies were again called to the area about 5:20 a.m. on similar reports, and callers reported hearing gunshots in the area as LASD units were en route.
Authorities were again unable to locate the suspect upon arrival, but learned from witnesses he was seen fleeing the area on foot westbound on Sale Place, according to the LASD.
Deputies set up a perimeter to search for the man and learned he was again spotted on a rooftop in the area. Residents also reported hearing additional gunshots, according to the LASD.
An LASD helicopter crew was able to locate the suspect, who authorities said was armed with a handgun. The man allegedly shot at the LASD helicopter and at deputies who were establishing a perimeter in the area.
Deputy Eva Jimenez said one of the deputies setting up the containment area shot the suspect in the lower body at about 7:40 a.m. The man was taken to a hospital, where he was listed in serious condition.
Authorities also recovered a handgun near the location the suspect was found.
No deputies were injured in the shooting.
