A bicyclist was killed in Long Beach Friday, though impaired driving and speed were not believed to be a factor in the collision.

The crash was reported just after 7:40 a.m. at the intersection of Oregon Avenue and 17th Street, near Pacific Coast Highway, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

Officers arrived and found that the man had been struck by a Ford F250 owned by the city. Long Beach Fire Department paramedics were called to the scene and pronounced the man dead. It was not immediately clear what department the pickup belonged to.

The man’s age was not disclosed and his name was withheld pending notification of his next of kin.

A preliminary investigation into the crash revealed the bicyclist was riding westbound on 17th and went through a stop sign at Oregon without stopping when he was hit by the pickup in the middle of the intersection, according to the LBPD.

The driver remained on scene and cooperated with police.

An investigation into the collision was ongoing and anyone with information was asked to contact LBPD Detective Loughlin at 562-570-7355. Anonymous tips can be called in to Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477 or submitted online at lacrimestoppers.org.
