A fire that broke out in the backyard of a Riverside home injured a resident and damaged an outbuilding but was stopped before reaching the main residence and a neighboring one, officials said Tuesday.

The blaze was reported at about 8:15 p.m. Monday in the 5400 block of Mountain Avenue, near Jurupa Avenue, according to the Riverside Fire Department.

Battalion Chief Bruce Vanderhorst said five engine crews and a truck company, numbering about two dozen personnel, were sent to the location and encountered flames originating from the unoccupied outbuilding, raging in a large back lot and threatening the main home.

Another house was also in the path of the fire, but firefighters quickly established defensive lines and prevented the two residences from being damaged, according to Vanderhorst.

The blaze was completely knocked down by 9:40 p.m., he said.

A resident, whose identity was not disclosed, suffered a minor injury, which wasn’t specified, but he declined to go to a hospital for further evaluation, Vanderhorst said.

Damage to the outbuilding and immediate surroundings was estimated to be $100,000.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
