Long Beach police Friday are investigating the circumstances around a shooting spree that began in Long Beach and ended in a hours-long standoff with a barricaded suspect in Carson.
Police responded to several shooting incidents at approximately 7:16 p.m. Thursday in the area of the 200 block of E. 57th Street in Long Beach and after a carjacking occurred in the same area, officers were led to a location in the 21000 block of Alameda Street in Carson where they found a vehicle that was reportedly carjacked, said Lt. Michael DePrete.
Officers located a person suspected of the shooting and carjacking in the area and called out a SWAT unit after the suspect barricaded himself inside a building, DePrete said.
While SWAT negotiators were attempting to deescalate the situation, they heard shots inside the building and entered the building, where they discovered the suspect with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, DePrete said.
SWAT medics rendered first aid to the suspect and Los Angeles County firefighters took him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The shooting and carjacking investigation is ongoing, police said.
