One person was killed Wednesday in the crash of a small airplane on an embankment near the westbound Foothill (210) Freeway in the Sylmar area.

The crash was reported about 12:30 p.m. near Sayre Street, said Margaret Stewart of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

“Firefighters have confirmed one person deceased and are searching to determine if there are any other aircraft occupants,” Stewart said in a statement shortly after the crash.

“There is a small fuel leak being contained and no fire issue,” Stewart said.

The circumstances of the crash were under investigation, but it occurred in the vicinity of Whiteman Airport in Pacoima.

The crash occurred on an embankment, apparently striking a bank of trees before hitting the ground just off the freeway. At least two freeway lanes were closed to accommodate emergency vehicles responding to the crash.
