A man found suffering a fatal gunshot wound next to the Los Angeles River in South Gate was positively identified Monday.

Saul Ruano was 41 years old, according to the coroner’s office. His city of residence was not available.

Officers from the South Gate Police Department responded to the bike path along the river just after 5:30 p.m. Friday in the 5300 block of Firestone Boulevard, near the Long Beach (710) Freeway, where they found the victim now identified as Ruano suffering from apparent gunshot wounds, said Deputy Raquel Utley of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau.

He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Utley said.

No suspect or suspect vehicle descriptions were available.

The Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau was assisting the South Gate Police Department in investigating the man’s death.
