The Ontario Police Department Saturday released the name of a man shot to death by an Ontario officer at the end of a vehicle pursuit in neighboring Pomona.
Miguel Angel Rodriguez was a 39-year-old resident of Pomona, according to Ontario police Corporal Bill Lee.
Ontario police tried to pulled over a vehicle at 7:37 p.m. Friday in the area of Mission Boulevard and Magnolia Avenue, triggering a chase that went through Montclair and into Pomona, where the suspect’s vehicle crashed into another vehicle at Kadota Avenue and Ninth Street, Lee said.
“Moments after the collision, the suspect driver fled from his vehicle armed with a firearm,” he said. “An Ontario Police Department K-9 was deployed and attempted apprehension. As officers approached the suspect an officer involved shooting occurred.”
Officers worked to keep Rodriguez alive until Montclair Fire Department paramedics arrived and he was pronounced dead, Lee said. A handgun was recovered at the scene.
Because the pursuit began in Ontario, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department is conducting the shooting investigation, he said.
