A man was found dead Friday inside an SUV outside a San Pedro hospital, possibly the victim of a shooting that occurred hours earlier a short distance away, police said.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the man — about 35-40 years of age — was sitting in a vehicle with another person at 14th and Mesa streets shortly before midnight when shots were fired into the vehicle.

Despite that reported shooting overnight, no victim was located at the scene. But police said officers responded around 6:50 a.m. to Providence Little Company of Mary hospital in the 1700 block of West Seventh Street, where they found the man dead in a passenger seat of the bullet-damaged SUV in the parking lot.

The person who drove the victim to the hospital was detained for questioning, and the investigation was continuing, police said.

According to the Daily Breeze, the driver of the SUV pulled up outside the hospital and ran inside to get help, but the man was dead when medical crews returned to the vehicle.

The reasons for the roughly six-hour delay between the shooting and the victim arriving at the hospital were unclear.

Information was not immediately available on the identity of the fatally wounded man.

No suspect description was available. A motive for the shooting was not known, police said.

Anyone with information on the crime was urged to call 877-LAPD-247.
