An off-duty Monterey Park Police Department officer was shot and killed in a parking lot of the Downey Landing shopping center, and a police investigation continues Tuesday in identifying a suspect.
The shooting was reported about 3:30 p.m. Monday in the 12700 block of Lakewood Boulevard, near the Glenn Anderson (105) Freeway, and the victim was found unresponsive in the seat of his car, according to Downey police.
Downey Fire Department paramedics were called to the scene and pronounced the man dead. His name was withheld pending notification of his next of kin, but CBS 2 reported the man was an off-duty officer with the Monterey Park Police Department.
Events leading up to the shooting were under investigation, and no suspect description was available.
“We can’t release too much, we are definitely looking for a suspect right now. There might be multiple suspects,” one Downey Police Department investigator told CBS 2.
A police procession from the Downey and Monterey Park police departments and Downey Fire Department escorted the officer to the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office on Monday night.
“As time goes on we’ll provide more information. Right now our main focus is that the person who did this is brought to justice,” Monterey Park Police Chief Kelly Gordon told CBS 2.
The police officer who was shot and killed was described as young and new to the department.
Gordon called the shooting a “tragedy.”
“It’s a tremendous loss,” she said.
