A 19-year-old motorist who died when her sedan slammed into a telephone pole at a Riverside intersection was identified Friday.
Victoria Velazquez of Riverside was fatally injured about 7:30 a.m. Thursday at Audrey Avenue and Jackson Street.
Riverside police Sgt. Emilio Angulo said that Velazquez was at the wheel of a 2000 Honda Accord going southbound on Jackson “at a high rate of speed” when she lost control, careened off of the roadway and into the pole.
Paramedics reached the location within a few minutes and found the motorist in grave condition, while her passenger, identified only as a Riverside man, was seriously injured, Angulo said.
He said that both victims were taken to Riverside Community Hospital, where Velazquez died a short time later.
The man is in stable condition and expected to survive.
The crash remains under investigation, and anyone with information was asked to contact the police Traffic Bureau at 951-826-8720.
