Firefighters extinguished a fire that threatened at least two adjacent commercial structures in Shadow Hills Wednesday.
Although the fire was under control in two hours, at least one crew was at the scene until it was cleared just before 7 p.m., said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Nicholas Prange.
The roof of the building at 10930 Randall St., west of Sunland Boulevard, collapsed. The conditions were so dangerous that the LAFD’s robotic firefighting unit, Thermite RS3, was sent in by remote control to allow more penetrative hose stream access without unnecessarily putting firefighters at risk, Prange said.
Firefighters were initially called at 2:31 a.m. when they encountered flames coming from the roof of the large one-story commercial building, according to LAFD spokesman Brian Humphrey.
The fire department dispatched 111 firefighters to the scene and they fought the blaze from a defensive position, Humphrey said.
The fire extended to vegetation and parked vehicles, Humphrey said.
No injures were reported.
