An 89-year-old woman was struck and killed by a car as she attempted to cross a street in Watts and the driver fled, police said Friday.
The crash occurred around 11 p.m. Thursday near 109th Street and Central Avenue, the Los Angeles Police Department told ABC7.
The woman who was identified by family members as Marie Alexander died at the scene. Alexander was hit by a dark-colored Chevrolet, the station reported.
Valeria Cordero, the owner of a market whose surveillance cameras caught the hit-and-run, told the station it was a dangerous area for pedestrians and there was an issue with poor lighting on the street.
Anyone with information on the hit-and-run driver was asked to call LAPD detectives at 323-421-2500 or 877-527-3247. Tipsters can also call Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477. A reward of up to $50,000 is being offered by the city for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the driver.
