An armed suspect was barricaded inside an SUV Monday in Canyon County, prompting some evacuations as sheriff’s personnel worked to take him into custody.

Deputies went to the 19300 block of Newhouse Street about 6:30 a.m., according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. It was unclear what initially prompted the response, although reports from the scene indicated the suspect may have been involved in an earlier pursuit.

The suspect was holed up inside a white SUV parked in a cul-de-sac. Delight Street and Whites Canyon Road were closed, and a sheriff’s SWAT team and crisis negotiators were working to contact the suspect. A trio of sheriff’s armored vehicles were brought to the scene, blocking in the suspect’s SUV.

ABC7 reported from the scene that the SUV appeared to have two flat tires, possibly from a spike strip deployed during an earlier pursuit. The station also reported that the suspect threw his weapon out of the vehicle when the armored vehicles began boxing him in, but he remained inside the SUV.

As a precaution, homes along the 19000 block of Newhouse Street were evacuated, and evacuees were being accommodated at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 19513 Drycliff St. Schools in the area remained open.
