A resolution recognizing the independence of the Republic of Artsakh and condemning Azerbaijan’s continued aggression against Armenia and Artsakh, was introduced Monday by Rep. Adam Schiff, coinciding with Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day.

Republic of Artsakh is a de facto independent state in the South Caucasus whose territory is internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan but is closely integrated with Armenia. It is also known as Nagorno-Karabakh Republic.

A series of clashes erupted along the Azerbaijan-Armenia border in September, resulting in at least 200 deaths. Following a ceasefire, Azerbaijan began a blockade of the Lachin Corridor Dec. 12, preventing humanitarian aid, basic supplies, and outside support from reaching approximately 120,000 civilians there.

“I am deeply concerned by the Aliyev regime’s blockade of the Lachin Corridor, and the continuing and deadly attacks on Armenians,” said Schiff, D-Burbank, referring to Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev. “The United States must recognize the right of self-determination of the people of Artsakh, the need for remedial secession, and stop sending support to Azerbaijan.

“Anything less will only further embolden Aliyev in his attempt to annihilate the Armenian people.”
