A 26-year-man was arrested after a 5-year-old girl died from injuries sustained from a fatal hit-and-run collision in South Los Angeles that also critically injured a 17-year-old girl, police said Friday.

Officers responded to the intersection of Main Street and Colden Avenue at around 7:45 p.m. Tuesday to a report about a traffic collision, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

A preliminary investigation revealed that a vehicle was traveling northbound on Main Street at high speed, running a red light moments before colliding into another vehicle with four occupants inside.

Two occupants, a 17-year-old girl and a 5-year-old girl, were severely injured, police said. The other two occupants were the toddler’s 32-year-old mother and her 14-year-old sibling.

The 5-year-old was admitted to a pediatric intensive care unit, where she died from her injuries Thursday.

Detectives arrested Pedro Murillo Wednesday for suspicion of felony hit-and-run with injury, police said.

Investigators have requested that murder charges be filed against Murillo by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office and sought potential witnesses with detailed information about the whereabouts or the activities Murillo was engaged in before the fatal collision.
