A 45-year-old transient pleaded guilty Thursday and was immediately sentenced to 12 years for stabbing a homeless woman in Anaheim.

Adrian Vargas pleaded guilty to stabbing a 53-year-old woman about 2:30 a.m. Nov. 19 in the 1100 block of South State College Boulevard, near Ball Road, according to police.

The victim was rushed to a hospital in critical condition but survived, police said.

Vargas pleaded guilty to attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon, both felonies, and to a misdemeanor count of resisting arrest. He also admitted a sentencing enhancement for great bodily injury.

Vargas was convicted of burglary in November 2010 in San Bernardino County, and assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer in Los Angeles County in February 2014, according to the criminal complaint.
