Two brush fires broke out Wednesday adjacent to a golf course in Jurupa Hills, scorching 25 acres on a hillside as crews deployed to contain them.
The fires were reported just after 2 p.m. in the vicinity of the Oak Quarry Golf Club, near Sierra Avenue and Armstrong Road, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.
The agency said multiple engine crews were sent to the location and encountered flames moving at a rapid rate upslope, not immediately threatening any homes or other structures.
The fires were on the boundary separating Riverside and San Bernardino counties, and the smaller of the two fires, totaling roughly five acres, was actually inside San Bernardino County as of 2:25 p.m. Cal Fire San Bernardino County crews were battling that brusher.
The larger blaze, totaling about 20 acres, was inside Riverside County.
Firefighters requested assistance from San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputies to shut down the north end of Sierra to prevent motorists from going southbound into the fire operation area, according to officials at the scene.
Three Cal Fire air tankers and three water-dropping helicopters were requested to make runs on the brushers. As of 2:30 p.m., the aircraft had not yet arrived.
Temperatures were approaching 100 degrees in the area.
There was no immediate word on what might have triggered the fires.
