A brush fire erupted Wednesday on the south edge of Cabazon, scorching roughly an acre before Cal Fire aircraft began making runs on the brusher, aiding ground crews.

The blaze was reported at about 11:45 a.m. in the area of Almond Street and Esperanza Avenue, nearly a mile south of Interstate 10, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

The agency said engine and hand crews from the county and U.S. Forest Service were sent to the location and encountered flames moving through medium brush at a moderate rate.

No homes or other structures were immediately threatened.

Cal Fire air tankers and water-dropping helicopters began making drops as ground personnel deployed at the site.

There was no immediate word on what might have triggered the fire.
