A 29-year-old man convicted of an attempted murder when he was 15 was charged Friday with a fatal shooting outside a liquor store in Santa Ana on Sunday, according to court records.

Manuel Chairezcampos Jr. was charged with murder and possession of a firearm by a felon, both felonies, and faces sentencing enhancements for the discharge of a firearm causing death and committing an offense while out on bail for another alleged crime, according to court records.

Chairezcampos pleaded guilty to attempted murder in June 2010 and admitted a sentencing enhancement for gang activity for a shooting on Oct. 24, 2008, according to court records.

Chairezcampos was out on bail after he was arrested for driving without a valid license on June 14 and charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Chairezcampos is accused of killing 29-year-old Jorge Velasquez of Santa Ana on Sunday. Velasquez was shot to death in a parking lot outside a liquor store at 2734 N. Bristol St., according to Santa Ana police Officer Natalie Garcia, the department’s spokeswoman.

Chairezcampos did not enter a plea at his arraignment in custody in the jail courtroom in Santa Ana on Friday. He is scheduled to be arraigned Sept. 1 in the Central Justice Center in Santa Ana.
