Firefighters battled and extinguished a greater alarm fire Friday evening at a metal recycling firm on Terminal Island in San Pedro.

Crews were called at 9:19 p.m. to a 100-foot-by-100-foot, open-roofed, metal-clad industrial building in the 900 block of East New Dock Street, according to Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey.

The fire was approximately 200 yards from the port’s waterline, Humphrey added.

The burning materials appeared to be debris related to automobile recycling, Humphrey said.

It took 68 firefighters 46 minutes to extinguish the flames.

No injuries were reported.
