The Desert Hot Springs Police Department will have additional officers on patrol, who will look for drivers suspected of being under the influence from Wednesday until New Year’s Day.
“Let’s make this a joyful and safe holiday season for everyone on the road,” Chief Jim Henson said in a statement. “This enforcement period allows us to get the message out that it is essential to act responsibly and plan a sober ride home.”
In December 2021, 1,012 people were killed in the United States as a result of alcohol-impaired-driving crashes, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Drivers were urged to be responsible when celebrating the holiday season by not driving under the influence. Impaired driving also includes marijuana, some prescription medication and over-the-counter drugs that could interfere with driving.
In addition to the added enforcement, the department will conduct a DUI checkpoint from 6 p.m. Friday until 2 a.m. Saturday at an undisclosed location based on data of impaired driving-related crashes.
“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” Henson said. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improves traffic safety.”
A first-time DUI charge could cost drivers about $13,500 in fines and penalties, according to police. Impaired drivers could also have their license suspended.
