The Los Angeles Police Department is investigating a shooting involving a man armed with a knife who had been barricaded inside a Sylmar apartment for more than six hours.
The shooting occurred at 8:35 p.m. Saturday on the 14100 block of Foothill Boulevard, Officer Tony Im told City News Service.
Initially, Mission Division officers responded to a 2 p.m. call about a “violent male with mental illness,” police said.
Officers found the man barricaded in an apartment, armed with a knife. They established a perimeter and called SWAT, according to department officials.
SWAT officers attempted to negotiate with the man before he came outside to a courtyard of the building at about 8 p.m., armed with a large kitchen knife, police said.
Shortly afterward, officers shot at the man.
No information was released about his condition.
