A bicyclist who was struck by a vehicle in Palm Desert last night succumbed to his injuries at a hospital, authorities said Wednesday.
Deputies from the Palm Desert sheriff’s station responded at 7:31 p.m. Tuesday to a report of a major injury traffic collision at Cook Street and Country Club Drive, according to Sgt. Don Olson of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.
They found a bicyclist, identified by the Riverside County coroner’s office as 62-year-old Jay Groth of Indio, on the roadway unresponsive and with major injuries.
“The male bicyclist was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased,” Olson wrote in a statement. “The driver of the involved vehicle remained at the scene and was cooperative during the investigation.”
Groth was pronounced dead at 8:37 p.m. Tuesday at Desert Regional Medical Center.
The intersection was temporarily closed as the Palm Desert Traffic Team investigated the collision, Olson said.
Anyone with additional information on the accident was asked to call Deputy Sanchez with the Palm Desert sheriff’s station at 760-836-1600 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 800-782-7463.
