Indio Police Department Assistant Chief Brian Tully will be sworn in Wednesday as the city’s new chief of police.
Tully will replace Chief Mike Washburn, who has been chief since 2016. The reasons for his departure have not been disclosed. City Manager Bryan Montgomery told KESQ last week that Washburn was on personal leave.
Wednesday’s swearing-in ceremony will be at 3 p.m. in the City Council Chamber, 150 Civic Center Drive, according to city officials.
“With a distinguished career, marked by exemplary service and profound commitment to the safety of our community, Chief Tully is well-equipped to lead the Indio Police Department into the future,” City Manager Bryan Montgomery said in a statement. “We are confident that under his leadership, Indio Police Department will continue to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and community engagement.”
Tully has been with IPD since 2018 and has overseen various functions of the department, including playing a role in oversight of the Coachella and Stagecoach festivals, city officials said. He has also served as project manager for the construction of the Public Safety Campus.
Tully has a bachelor of science degree in business administration, a master of business administration degree, and graduated the FBI National Academy, California POST Command College, and West Point Leadership Program, according to city officials. He originally worked with the San Bernardino Police Department.
Tully has more than 25 years of professional experience in policing and is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, California Police Chiefs Association, and Indio Sunrise Rotary, city officials said.
The city also expressed gratitude to Washburn.
“His leadership and efforts as the chief of police will be remembered and appreciated,” according to a city statement.
