A fire that broke out Friday in thick brush along the Santa Ana River bottom in Jurupa Valley blackened roughly 15 acres before crews began encircling it.

The non-injury blaze was reported at 1:40 p.m. in the area of Limonite and Ridgeview avenues, on the north side of the river bottom, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

Multiple engine crews from the county and city of Riverside were sent to the location and encountered flames burning through heavy brush at a slow to moderate rate.

Cal Fire water-dropping helicopters were summoned to assist ground personnel, who were pushing into the heavy vegetation to establish containment lines as of 5 p.m.

No structures were threatened.

There was no immediate word regarding how the brusher might have started. Homeless encampments are spread throughout the river bottom, and warming, cooking and debris fires are common year-round.
