A dispute between two families led to a man being stabbed following South El Monte High School’s graduation ceremony, authorities said Thursday.
The stabbing occurred around 9:20 p.m. Wednesday in the 1000 block of Durfee Avenue, just outside the school football field’s fence, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
Sheriff’s Sgt. Richard Lewis told KNX News that an altercation erupted between two families following the graduation. The fight began as a verbal altercation then evolved into a physical assault.
The fight resulted in one person — a man believed to be in his early 20s — being stabbed in the upper body and another person being punched or slapped, Lewis told the station. The man who was stabbed was taken to a hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening.
No suspect description was available, but Lewis indicated that detectives believe they know the suspect’s identity.
