A pedestrian was struck and killed Thursday in San Jacinto by a motorist who allegedly fled the scene but was ultimately apprehended by deputies.
The deadly hit-and-run occurred just after 3 a.m. Thursday on San Jacinto Avenue south of Shaver Street, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.
Sgt. Patrick Lynch said that the victim, whose identity was not immediately released, was hit in the middle of the roadway, but it was unclear whether he was trying to cross it at the time.
The driver slammed into the pedestrian at an unconfirmed speed and fled, Lynch said.
Paramedics pronounced the victim dead at the scene moments later.
The suspect, whose identity also wasn’t disclosed, was identified through evidence collected in the hours immediately following the fatality and taken into custody without incident, according to Lynch.
