An American Medical Response ambulance was struck by a pickup truck Monday in Lancaster while taking a patient to Antelope Valley Medical Center.

Deputies from the Lancaster Sheriff’s Station were dispatched regarding a crash involving an AMR ambulance and a Ram pickup truck towing a boat at Avenue J and Division Street around 3:20 p.m. Monday, according to a statement from the station.

Investigators determined that the pickup truck was traveling southbound on Division Street while the ambulance was heading northbound on the same street, authorities said.

“The AMR ambulance was in the left-turn lane, intending to make a westbound turn onto Avenue J, as the Ram was in the number one lane. Both vehicles entered the intersection during a solid green traffic signal,” the statement said.

The ambulance driver yielded to traffic and did not begin the turn heading westbound until the traffic signal turned yellow, authorities said.

As the ambulance driver was beginning the turn without the emergency lights or siren on, the pickup truck “broadsided” the ambulance while a patient was inside, according to the statement.

The patient and paramedics were taken to Antelope Valley Medical Center for injuries sustained in the collision.

The occupant of the pickup truck declined to be taken to a hospital, authorities said.

Alcohol or drug impairment does not appear to be determining factors leading up to the crash, and sheriff’s officials said the cause remained under investigation Monday night.

Anyone with information regarding the collision was urged to call Lancaster Sheriff’s Station traffic detectives at 661-948-8466.
