Police were continuing their effort Wednesday to locate a motorist who caused a motorcycle rider to lose control of his bike and slide under a box truck in Lincoln Heights, killing him.
The crash occurred around 7:35 a.m. May 18 near the intersection of South Avenue 20 and North Broadway, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
Police said a 49-year-old motorcyclist was traveling north on Avenue 20 when a white Ford pickup with a rear metal utility rack heading west on Broadway entered the intersection through a red light, causing the motorcycle rider to swerve and “lay down his motorcycle” to avoid a collision with the truck.
“In doing so, the motorist collided with the roadway, and his body slid under a box truck traveling southbound Avenue 20, which ran him over,” police said in a statement.
The pickup driver fled the scene without stopping.
Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics took the motorcyclist to a hospital, where he later died.
“Drivers are reminded that if they become involved in a collision, they should pull over and stop as soon as it is safe to do so, notify emergency services, and remain at the scene to identify themselves,” police said.
The city offers a standing reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to the identification, arrest, and conviction of suspects in fatal hit-and-run crashes.
