The Indio Police Department will conduct a DUI checkpoint Friday at an undisclosed location, according to a statement released Wednesday.
The checkpoint will be held from 7:30 p.m. Friday until 3 a.m. inside the city limits of Indio, the department said. Officers will be looking for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment in addition to checks for proper licensing.
“DUI Checkpoints have been an essential part of the phenomenal reduction in DUI deaths that we witnessed since 2006 in California,” said Christopher J. Murphy, who directs the Office of Traffic Safety. “But since the tragedy of DUI accounts for nearly one-third of traffic fatalities, the city of Indio needs the high visibility enforcement and public awareness that checkpoints provide.”
Impaired driving includes driving under the influence of alcohol, marijuana, some prescription medication and over-the-counter drugs.
DUI charges can carry punishments of jail, license suspension, insurance increases, fines, fees, DUI classes and other expenses that can exceed $10,000, the department said.
