Security was increased at courthouses across Los Angeles County Wednesday following an explosion at a court building in Santa Barbara County that left two people injured and a suspect in custody.
Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department officials said they were monitoring the situation in Santa Maria, where a suspect apparently walked into a county courthouse and tossed a bag or backpack that exploded near an arraignment court. Two people suffered injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.
The suspect was detained at the scene.
In Los Angeles County, the sheriff’s department provides security for 37 courthouses.
“As a precaution, we are on heightened alert and providing extra patrols in and around our courts,” according to a sheriff’s department statement. “At this time there are no credible threats to any courthouses in Los Angeles County.”
