Police were continuing to seek public help Thursday in locating a hit-and-run driver who killed a 53-year-old woman in South Los Angeles.
The collision occurred on Jan. 6 at around 9:20 p.m., when a white Toyota Corolla traveling west on 60th Street was struck by a white BMW being driven north on Broadway at a high rate of speed, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
The impact caused the BMW to veer into four parked vehicles, and the driver abandoned the sedan and fled on foot without stopping to render aid to the injured woman in the Toyota, police said.
Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics took the woman to a hospital, where she later died. She was identified by the Medical Examiner’s Office as Norma Garcia Benitz.
Detectives described the suspect as being in his mid-20s, 5-feet-7-inches tall, with black hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a white T-shirt and blue jeans.
The suspect vehicle is a four-door BMW 528i with California license plate 6ROJ328.
A reward of up to $50,000 is being offered by the city for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of the suspect.
“We would like to remind everybody when involved in a traffic crash to stop and check on the other parties, make sure they are not injured, call 911 if they need medical attention, and to exchange information. Don’t convert a traffic crash into a crime,” the police department said in a statement.
