Authorities Friday identified a 77-year-old man who was killed in a two-car collision in Boyle Heights that involved a vehicle allegedly being driven at a high speed..
Los Angeles Fire Department firefighters were called at 9:06 p.m. Thursday to 3066 E. Fourth St. and South Fresno Street, where they found three injured people who were freed from the wreckage of the collision, said LAFD spokeswoman Margaret Stewart.
The driver of one of the vehicles was pronounced dead at the scene, Stewart said.
On Friday, the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner identified the man as Jose Trevizo of Los Angeles.
An 18-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy who were in the other car were taken to hospitals in serious condition, the LAFD reported.
According to the Los Angeles Police Department, Trevizo was westbound on Fourth and turning left to go south on Fresno Street when the other car, which was eastbound on Fourth, collided with his car.
The Mercedes-Benz could be seen on security video hitting the side of the Honda.
Neighbors told KTLA5 that Trevizo was a longtime resident of Boyle Heights. A witness told the station she believed the Mercedes-Benz was speeding at the time of the crash.
“I want to say they were probably going like 85, 90. They were going pretty fast,” Connie Lomeli told the station. Lomeli said the teens “didn’t look like they were under the influence or anything.”
Area residents told KTLA5 that speeding and crashes are common on the stretch of road where Trevizo was killed.
Police have not determined whether speed or alcohol were factors in the crash, which remains under investigation. Anyone with information on the case was urged to call 877-LAPD-247.
