A fire that broke out Tuesday just north of the Pomona (60) Freeway in Jurupa Valley appeared to have been intentionally set, burning roughly a quarter acre before it was stopped and a suspect was taken into custody.

The non-injury blaze was reported at 3:20 p.m. Tuesday in the area of Canal and 29th streets, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

The agency said multiple engine crews were sent to the location and encountered flames burning to the southeast at a moderate rate amid breezy conditions.

Sheriff’s deputies arrived just before firefighters and detained a person seen loitering at the spot where the fire erupted. The man, whose identity was not disclosed, was taken into custody without incident on suspicion of arson.

There was no word on whether he was an itinerant or resident.

Firefighters stopped its forward rate of spread at 3:45 p.m. and completely knocked it down 10 minutes later, according to officials at the scene.

No homes or other properties were threatened.
