A man who called the Cathedral City Police Department shot himself in front of officers Thursday, according to the department.
CCPD personnel received a report of a suicidal person shortly after 6:30 a.m. Thursday near the Napa Auto Parts store from a different person, who requested that officers perform a welfare check on the suicidal man, according to a statement from the department.
While officers were driving to his location, local resident Enrique Gonzalez, 38, called police himself to say he was armed, according to the department. In addition, he informed them he had moved to a parking lot at the intersection of Buddy Rogers Avenue and Monty Hall Drive.
Upon arrival, officers attempted to speak with Gonzalez, at which point he shot himself with a firearm concealed in his vehicle, according to the department. He was pronounced deceased as police attempted to provide medical assistance, officers said.
The case has been passed onto the Riverside County Coroner’s office, whose personnel reached the scene later.
Authorities said family of Gonzalez’s were notified.
