A woman was killed in a head-on, two-vehicle collision in Indio that also left two other people with major injuries, authorities said.
Officers responded to a report of a collision on Fred Waring Drive and Avenue 44 shortly before 6 a.m. Friday, according to the Indio Police Department.
Sgt. Abe Plata said a BMW sedan was traveling eastbound on Fred Waring Drive and “for an unknown reason veered into oncoming traffic.”
The sedan collided head-on with a Nissan Sentra in the westbound lanes. A female passenger inside the sedan suffered significant injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.
The identity of the deceased victim was withheld pending notification of next of kin.
Plata said the driver of the BMW, only identified as a 45-year-old man, and the driver of the Nissan, a 37-year-old woman, suffered major injuries and were both rushed to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs. The BMW driver was said to be in stable condition while the Nissan driver was in critical condition.
