One person is dead and a man is in police custody Friday in connection with a fatal collision following a police pursuit in Westchester that slowed morning traffic in the LAX area.
Officers from the Los Angeles Police Department’s Southwest Division were pursuing a driving while intoxicated suspect in an SUV around 1:30 a.m. Friday. The chase ended in the 10000 block South Sepulveda Boulevard, near Century and Aviation boulevards when the suspect crashed into a blue Honda sedan, LAPD Officer Nelson told City News Service.
Television footage shows the SUV nearly split in half after the collision.
A passenger in the SUV was pronounced dead at the scene and a person in the Honda was taken to a hospital in an unknown condition.
The second person traveling in the SUV tried to leave the scene but was captured and arrested, police said.
LAX police advised that travel times to LAX would be affected by the road closures at Sepulveda and Century boulevards, with southbound Sepulveda Boulevard traffic diverted to 96th Street and northbound Sepulveda Boulevard diverted into the Upper/Arrivals level.
