Four boys suspected of attempting to carjack a vehicle near the Westfield Culver City shopping mall were taken into custody, police announced Monday.
Officers responded to the 6100 block of Sepulveda Boulevard around 5 p.m. Thursday to reports of an attempted carjacking, according to the Culver City Police Department.
Further investigation revealed to officers that four boys approached a man in the area and demanded his vehicle, with one suspect allegedly retrieving a firearm from his waistband and requesting the victim’s keys while three others surrounded him.
“The victim told the suspect that the vehicle didn’t belong to him, and all four suspects then ran southbound on Sepulveda Boulevard,” police said in a statement.
A perimeter was established as officers canvassed the area for the suspects. One suspect noticed nearby patrol vehicles and began running toward the Hannum Avenue overpass of the Marina (90) Freeway.
“As the suspect ran, he continued to reach towards his waistband. Officers caught up quickly and placed the suspect under arrest,” police said.
According to the police, two additional suspects were found, detained and subsequently taken into custody. The fourth suspect was apprehended shortly after the other three were arrested and taken into custody.
The names of the suspects were not released because of their ages.
Investigators recovered a firearm with a bullet in the chamber believed to be connected to the attempted carjacking.
