A fire that broke out Wednesday north of the Salton Sea in Mecca scorched roughly 25 acres and briefly threatened residential properties before it was stopped.
The non-injury blaze was reported at 11:20 a.m. Wednesday in the area of Lincoln Street and 67th Avenue, roughly two miles north of the sea, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.
The agency said multiple engine crews were sent to the location and encountered flames in open space, burning at a moderate rate amid gusty conditions.
Public safety officials issued an evacuation order impacting a mobile home park just east of the burn zone as a precaution.
Just after 2 p.m., the fire’s forward rate of spread was stopped, and less than two hours later the blaze was largely contained. The evacuation order was then downgraded to a “warning,” and residents were permitted to return to their homes.
The cause of the fire was under investigation.
