A motorist who suffered major injuries was arrested after a single-vehicle crash in Palmdale killed one of his passengers and left the other with major injuries, authorities said Tuesday.
CHP officers responded at 10:09 p.m. Monday to 50th Street East and East Avenue P after receiving a call from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department regarding a vehicle that was driven into a ditch, where it then crashed into a fence, CHP Officer Sergio Garcia told City News Service.
Daniel Zayas was driving a 2004 Acura eastbound on Avenue P, approaching 50th Street East, when the 21-year-old Lancaster resident — traveling at an unsafe speed — failed to stop at the intersection’s stop sign, according to a CHP statement.
The car continued through the intersection and left the roadway, where it struck the fence and a dirt berm, authorities said.
Zayas’ passenger, an 18-year-old man from Lancaster, was pronounced dead at the scene. Paramedics rushed Zayas and the other passenger, a 19-year-old Lancaster man, to Antelope Valley Medical Center.
“The involvement of alcohol and/or drugs is being investigated as a possible factor in this traffic crash,” according to the CHP.
Anyone with information regarding the crash was urged to call the CHP’s Antelope Valley office at 661-743-6060 during business hours or, after hours, the CHP’s Los Angeles Traffic Management Center at 323-259-3200.
