A 66-year-old man was arrested and charged for his role in a fatal three-vehicle collision last year that left one dead and three injured in Palm Springs, authorities announced Friday.
The crash happened at the intersection of North Indian Canyon Drive and 20th Avenue on March 27, 2024, according to the Palm Springs Police Department.
An investigation by the city’s traffic investigators revealed Joseph Elorie of Desert Hot Springs was southbound on Indian Canyon Drive at more than 100 miles per hour when he collided with two slower vehicles at the intersection.
One person was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, and three other occupants from the same vehicle were transported to a hospital with moderate to significant injuries, police said.
It was determined that neither alcohol nor drugs were factors in the crash.
Elorie was taken into custody on a warrant and booked into the John J. Benoit Detention Center in Indio on Thursday. His bail was set at $1 million.
The case was presented to the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office, which filed charges. The exact charges were not immediately disclosed.
“The Palm Springs Police Department extends its condolences to the victims and their families. We remain committed to seeking justice for those affected by this tragic incident and will continue to provide updates as the case progress,” Palm Springs police said.
