A man suspected of throwing a liquid-filled can at sheriff’s deputies during a protest in downtown Los Angeles against federal immigration enforcement and a second man suspected of encouraging him were arrested, authorities said Thursday.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department-Sheriff’s Response Team issued a dispersal order to an unlawfully assembled crowd on Wednesday. At that time, Javier Gonzalez allegedly approached deputies, yelling and using profanity despite multiple commands to retreat, according to the Sheriff’s Information Bureau.

Sheriff’s officials stated that Bryan Mugarte approached the skirmish line and encouraged Gonzalez to assault the deputies, which was immediately followed by Gonzalez allegedly throwing a large 22-ounce aluminum can filled with liquid, striking a deputy.

Gonzalez turned around and ran moments before being tackled to the ground by a good Samaritan and taken into custody by deputies.

The deputy allegedly struck by Gonzalez was evaluated at the scene and later returned to duty.

“We are grateful that our deputy was not seriously injured and was able to return to work,” Sheriff Robert G. Luna said in a statement.

“We also want to sincerely acknowledge the courageous actions of the good Samaritan who intervened during a volatile situation. Their willingness to step in without regard for their own safety helped prevent further harm, and we are truly grateful for their selfless act. Moments like this highlight the important role our community plays in supporting public safety.”

Gonzalez was booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, while Mugarte was booked on suspicion of solicitation to commit specific criminal acts.

Anyone with additional information regarding the case was urged to contact Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477 or visit lacrimestoppers.org.
