A 27-year-old man suspected of breaching a skirmish line during a demonstration in downtown Los Angeles sustained a head injury when he was shot with less-lethal ammunition, the Los Angeles Police Department announced Tuesday.

Officers from the LAPD and other law enforcement agencies responded to mass protests in downtown Los Angeles at around 6:35 p.m. Saturday, according to the department.

Officers established a skirmish line during a crowd control mobile field force operation, when Jack Kearns allegedly breached the barrier, resulting in an officer assigned to the 77th Street Community Police Station deploying one round from a 40mm less-lethal launcher toward Kearns, police said.

Kearns sustained an injury to the back of his head, was taken into custody, and later admitted to a hospital for medical treatment for his injury.

Investigators from the Force Investigation Division assumed the case.

No officers or additional members of the public sustained injuries during the incident, police said.
