An investigation was underway Monday into the wounding of two juveniles who were shot while riding in a Waymo driverless car in Santa Monica.
The victims were shot about 11:40 p.m. Sunday near the intersection of Second Street and Broadway, according to Santa Monica Police Department Lt. Lewis Gilmour.
One was shot in an arm and the other in the body, according to Gilmour, who said both were in stable condition when taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
“Preliminary information indicates the shooting was a targeted and isolated incident that followed a verbal altercation earlier in the evening between the victims and the suspect,” Gilmour said.
“At the time of the shooting, the victims were passengers in an autonomous rideshare vehicle when the suspect approached on foot and fired multiple rounds into the vehicle before fleeing the scene.”
It was not clear whether the suspect had been identified.
Detectives were reviewing surveillance footage and pursuing leads. Anyone with information about the shooting was urged to contact the Santa Monica Police Department watch commander at 310-458-8427.
