A brush fire that erupted Monday on the very east end of Moreno Valley scorched five acres before being contained.

The non-injury blaze was reported at 2:55 p.m. Monday along Gilman Springs Road, near East Alessandro Boulevard, in a rugged lightly populated area known as the Badlands, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

Multiple engine crews reached the location within minutes and encountered flames moving at a slow rate across open terrain.

Two Cal Fire air tankers and a water-dropping helicopter from Hemet-Ryan Airport located 10 miles to the south arrived shortly afterward and made several runs on the fire, enabling crews to quickly establish hose lays, according to reports from the scene.

No structures were threatened, and no road closures were necessary.

All aircraft departed by 4 p.m., and about an hour later, the fire was completely contained, officials said.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
