A man suspected of driving under the influence crashed into a power pole and caused a power outage in some areas of Calimesa, authorities said Saturday.

The crash was reported at 3:38 a.m. Saturday in the area of West Avenue L and Third Street, where deputies found a truck that crashed into a power pole, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

The driver, identified as 31-year-old Chance Kuaea of Calimesa, was arrested and booked into the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.

Southern California Edison responded to the location to repair the damaged pole and estimated that power to the affected area would be restored by around 6 p.m. Saturday.

The affected areas included Avenue L from Sundar Drive to California Street and the area south of Avenue L to Country Club Drive. West Avenue L between Third Street and Second Place was closed until repairs were complete.

Kuaea was being held on a $2,500 bail and was scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 5, 2026.

Anyone with additional information regarding the crash was encouraged to contact Deputy Arrieta at 951-922-7100.
