A man suspected of vandalizing the Coachella Valley branch of the Riverside County District Attorney’s office in Indio fled onto the roof of a building Monday, prompting a police standoff that closed a stretch of Highway 111.
Officers responded to the District Attorney’s Office branch on Highway 111 in Indio at about 8:45 a.m. Monday on a report of vandalism, according to the Indio Police Department. The nature of the vandalism was unclear.
Police said a witness followed a suspect, who allegedly vandalized additional property then climbed onto the roof of a building in the 83000 block of Highway 111.
Police, including a SWAT team, responded and were working to take the suspect into custody. Highway 111 was closed between Salton Street and Golf Center Parkway while police continued the effort.
The suspect, whose name was not released, is wanted on suspicion of vandalism and assault with a deadly weapon, and also has an active felony warrant, police said.
Motorists were advised to avoid the area.
