A man who allegedly vandalized the Coachella Valley branch of the Riverside County District Attorney’s office in Indio and fled onto the roof of a building Monday, prompting a police standoff, but was ultimately taken into custody.

Officers responded to the District Attorney’s Office branch on Highway 111 in Indio at about 8:45 a.m. Monday on a report of vandalism, according to the Indio Police Department. The nature of the vandalism was unclear.

Police said a witness followed a suspect, who allegedly vandalized additional property then climbed onto the roof of a building in the 83000 block of Highway 111, prompting a standoff with police, including a SWAT team.

Around 2 p.m., several flash-bangs were thrown at the rooftop of the Sunline building, and officers apprehended the suspect, who was evaluated by paramedics at the scene but was not injured.

The suspect, whose name was not released, will be booked into Benoit Detention Center in Indio on suspicion of vandalism and assault with a deadly weapon, and he also has an active felony warrant, police said.

Highway 111 between Salton Street and Golf Center Parkway was closed during the standoff, but later reopened.
